Fathers in Fiction and Faith: Father-Son Lessons from Sci-Fi and Scripture

I feel truly blessed when I think about my dad. He worked tirelessly at his job to provide for us five kids and put even more effort into raising us to be responsible, truth-seeking, and positive contributors to society. Looking back, I remember his late nights at work, but what stands out are the camping trips, baseball games, and scouting adventures we shared. I learned so much from him. I was also blessed with a stepfather who taught me about local law enforcement and the daily dangers they face.

Not all sons are as lucky. Some fathers are absent physically or mentally for various reasons. Some want to be there but feel unworthy due to their upbringing or situations that keep them away. Others struggle to connect with their sons' interests. Some try their best with what they have, while sadly, some believe leaving might be better.

Reflecting on these different father-child relationships reminds me of famous pairs like Han Solo and Ben Solo, Cypher and Kitai Raige from "After Earth," and Captain Sisko and his son Jake from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." These stories show us that, despite challenges, the bond between a father and child is incredibly important and impactful.

The example of Han and Ben Solo starts with a conversation between General Leia and Han Solo. Han expresses his sorrow and apology about Ben. The relationship between Han Solo and Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) in the Star Wars saga is complex. Han, a former smuggler turned hero, struggled with fatherhood due to his past and the demands of a galactic conflict. Ben's abilities and Han's struggle to help lead him added strain to their relationship. Despite his efforts, Ben felt abandoned, leading him to the dark side. Han, feeling defeated about losing his son, returned to his former way of life, which made Ben feel rejected. This story shows the profound impact of a father's presence—or absence—on a son's development. Han's love for Ben never waned, highlighting that even strained relationships are rooted in deep, unconditional love.

Another comparison is the relationship between Hunter and the crew with Omega in "Star Wars: The Bad Batch." Though technically a sister to them, the crew became father figures to Omega. This bond demonstrates the importance of teaching a child valuable skills and showing them, they are not alone. The crew's protection and mentorship helped Omega navigate her unique challenges, highlighting how fatherly guidance and support can shape a child's growth and confidence. This relationship exemplifies the blend of familial love and the essential role of surrogate fatherhood.

In "After Earth," Cypher Raige and his son Kitai navigate a world of danger and estrangement. Cypher, a stern and stoic general, struggles to connect with Kitai emotionally. The film showcases their journey toward understanding and trust. Cypher's tough exterior and high expectations push Kitai to his limits, ultimately preparing him to face life's challenges. This narrative underscores the balance fathers must strike between discipline and emotional support.

The bond between Captain Benjamin Sisko and his son Jake in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" exemplifies a nurturing and supportive father-son relationship. Despite the pressures of commanding a space station, Sisko prioritizes Jake, offering guidance and companionship. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, love, and understanding, showing how a father's dedication can profoundly shape a child's character and future.

These are just some of the sci-fi parallels of father-child relationships that are mirrored in the Bible. Han and Ben’s relationship reminds me of King David and his sons. Amnon, David’s eldest, had an unhealthy "love" for his half-sister Tamar, driven by lust rather than genuine affection. Following the advice of his friend Jonadab, Amnon committed a tragic act. Absalom, another son of David, harbored resentment toward Amnon for what he did to Tamar and plotted revenge for two years. When Absalom finally avenged Tamar by killing Amnon, he fled and remained in exile for three years. King David’s response to this family crisis was inadequate, failing to take appropriate action. These actions should have been handled by King David within the family before they turned into rape and murder. Absalom’s rebellion against David further highlighted the consequences of David’s weak leadership within his family.

In contrast, the relationship between King David and Solomon (2 Sam 12:24), another son, reflects the training and guidance that Hunter gave to Omega. I can even see the reflection of Cypher and Kitai in the story of King David and his sons. Although it's not in the Bible, perhaps the contrast of parenting could be a failed effort to connect with Amnon and Absalom. There are many stories of good father-son relationships like Captain Benjamin Sisko and his son Jake. I’m reminded of Noah and his sons (Genesis 6-9), Abraham and Isaac (Genesis 22), and, of course, God the Father and His Son, Jesus. Within these good relationships, there is a strong respect and trust between both father and son.

 

These examples, both real and fictional, underscore the vital role fathers play in their son's lives. Whether through love, guidance, or simply being present, fathers shape their children's futures in profound ways. I know that I have been talking about the presents that fathers have on their son. Fathers have a deep role in the lives of their daughter. Fathers, I know the weight you carry. This weight is also a crown if you take the responsibility and train your children. It will feel crushing and, at times, too much to handle, but you are part of what the society of tomorrow is built on. So, fathers, work hard and love what counts because fatherhood is about working for an outcome, not an income. My final thought is if you are rejected and they leave, be there waiting with open arms like the father of the prodigal son. (Luke 15:11)

In this blog, we'll explore the “sevenish” essential skills that form the foundation of a fulfilling life. These skills aren't just about survival; they're about thriving, overcoming feelings of overwhelm and anxiety, and embracing every adventure with confidence.

Let's start with First Aid:

In an ideal world, we'd have access to Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram,

but alas, that technology is still a way off. For now, we rely on the 911 system and the incredible work of dispatchers and first responders. But what about you? You might be the first on the scene. Do you know what to do?

Basic First Aid knowledge can truly be a lifesaver. Recognizing the signs of stroke or heart attack, and the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and being able to administer first aid in these situations can make all the difference. It's natural to feel panicked in an emergency, but if you're equipped with the right skills, you can stay calm and take action.

There are many ways to learn First Aid. One of my favorites is to take a class with the Red Cross. Additionally, your local Police Department, Fire Department, or EMT may offer training sessions. By investing your time in learning First Aid, you're not just gaining a valuable skill—you're potentially saving lives.

 

Let's talk about Housekeeping Skills:

Ever walked into a hotel room and felt that instant sense of calm? That's the power of cleanliness. Studies actually show that a tidy living space can significantly improve your mental state. So, start small—make your bed. It doesn't have to be perfect, just get it done. Even if everything else in your day goes sideways, you can say you accomplished one thing, which is a big mood booster.

Keeping a clean house isn't just good for your mental health; it's also beneficial for your physical health. Plus, it can save you money in the long run. Sure, it might feel like a chore at times, but trust me, it's worth it. And until we have robots like the Jetsons' Rosie or Wall-E's M-O, the closest thing we've got is a Roomba.

Now, if only we had Dark Helmet's Space Vacuum to make housekeeping even easier! But until that day comes, let's stick to the good old-fashioned methods and enjoy the benefits of a clean space!

Let's talk about Grocery Shopping and Cooking:

You don't need to be a master chef to nail this skill, although having a replicator like in Star Trek would be pretty sweet. Grocery shopping can feel overwhelming with all the choices, but trust me, it's not as complicated as it seems. And if you're worried about time, technology has your back. You can now shop without even leaving your car or have groceries delivered straight to your doorstep.

As for cooking, it doesn't have to be a time-consuming ordeal. Thanks to kitchen gadgets like crockpots, Instapots, and microwaves, whipping up a meal has never been quicker or easier. Plus, cooking at home not only saves you money but also allows you to control the sodium and fat content of your meals.

So, embrace your inner chef, and let's get cooking! With a little planning and creativity, you'll be amazed at what you can whip up in your kitchen.

Laundry can feel like a necessary evil, but fear not, even the USS Enterprise

NC-1701 had its own laundry facilities on Deck H. Most homes have washer and dryer connections, although apartments may vary in their amenities. While saving money on laundry can be a bit challenging, there are ways to cut costs. If you're able to use a laundromat and do your own laundry, it'll be cheaper than dropping it off at the cleaners every week. Rapid starts, sudden stops, and reckless cornering all contribute to wear and tear on your vehicle's drive train, brakes, and tires. And yes, this applies even to electric vehicles. Not to mention, these habits can also lead to lower fuel economy, putting a dent in your intergalactic travel budget.

But fear not, intrepid travelers! Mastering basic car maintenance skills can help you avoid costly repairs and keep your starship cruising through the cosmos without a hitch. Knowing how to check fluids, change a tire, and monitor air pressure can mean the difference between a smooth journey and an unexpected pit stop on a distant asteroid.

Money management is a skill that influences many aspects of our lives, just like the Force flows through all living things. It's about taking control of your finances instead of letting them control you. Budgeting and paying bills are key components of money management, akin to navigating through asteroid fields and avoiding financial pitfalls. Additionally, setting up utilities, planning for the future, and understanding credit are crucial parts of mastering this skill, similar to calculating hyperspace jumps and plotting a course to financial stability. Self-control is essential in this journey, much like resisting the allure of the dark side of overspending. We also need to be aware of the temptations faced by a Ferengi. So, until we discover a way not to exchange Republic Credits and Cubits, mastering money management remains the ultimate must in our earthly endeavors.

Navigating the realm of electronics can feel like exploring a new galaxy—exciting, but also filled with unknown dangers. Some may embrace this skill with open arms, while others approach it with trepidation, experiencing a love/hate relationship akin to the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. Personally, I revel in acquiring the latest gadgets, from phones to tablets to laptops. There's something empowering about the surge of battery power and the endless possibilities for connection with friends, family, and the vast expanse of information and entertainment. Yet, we've all encountered moments of despair and frustration when that connection is lost, leaving us adrift in a sea of digital uncertainty.

In many ways, our relationship with electronics mirrors the epic struggles of Middle Earth—a constant battle between the forces of light and dark, technology and nature. Just as Frodo and Sam journeyed through the perilous landscapes of Mordor, so too do we navigate the treacherous terrain of cyberspace. And just as Gandalf counseled Frodo to sometimes "unplug" from the world around him, so too can we benefit from disconnecting from our devices and embracing moments of quiet reflection.

In the grand tapestry of life, relationships form the intricate threads that bind us together, weaving a rich tapestry of human connection that spans across galaxies and dimensions. But cultivating meaningful relationships isn't just about the bond between spouses or family members—it's about how we interact with everyone we encounter, from our neighbors to the person on the other end of the phone line.

Mastering the art of relationships is perhaps the most challenging skill of all, requiring a delicate balance of empathy, understanding, and compassion. It's a skill that requires constant nurturing and refinement, much like a gardener tending to their plants in the vast gardens of Rivendell.

At its core, the golden rule—treat others as you would like to be treated—serves as a guiding principle for building healthy, thriving relationships. Yet, we must also recognize that the world doesn't always operate in a reciprocal manner. Despite our best efforts, we may not always receive the kindness or respect we extend to others. But even in the face of disappointment or adversity, we must strive to maintain our integrity and continue treating others with dignity, kindness, and above all, love.

It's been said that love covers a multitude of sins, and indeed, it is love that has the power to mend broken bonds and heal wounded hearts. So, as we journey through the vast expanse of life, let us cultivate a spirit of hospitality towards our neighbors, extending a hand of friendship to those who may be facing their own Goa’uld. And in moments of difficulty or strife, let us remember to approach each interaction with grace and understanding, knowing that behind every face lies a story, and behind every voice, a world of hopes and dreams.

Unveiling the Cosmic Alliances: Why Supporting Israel Matters More Than You Think

 

In the realm of sci-fi, alliances are often the key to survival, just as they are in our world. The recent events involving Israel's involvement in a war and the protests at Cambridge have made me ponder the importance of alliances, even in fictional universes. It's astonishing to see a nation like Israel, exercising its right to protect its citizens, facing such intense pushback.

I’ll try to explain in 5 points why we need to support the Israel government. 

Let’s start with a shared strategic interest. 

In the real-world U.S.-Israel alliance, both countries share strategic interests related to security, intelligence, and regional stability. War in any part of the world puts stress on not only the countries involved, but on the world as a whole. This stress is felt in economic troubles, humanitarian issues, cultural impacts and long-term effects like population reduction, resulting in more economic troubles, and PDST.

With that said, secondly, Mutual Defense and Assistance is the second point. The U.S. and Israel collaborate on defense technologies, military exercises, and intelligence sharing. In a fictional setting, an alliance could involve exchanging advanced technologies or pooling resources to combat a common adversary.

In the Star Trek realm, The United Federation of Planets has a core value of liberty, equality, peace, justice, progress, and aims to further the universal rights of all sentient life. For example, the Vulcan High Council operate outside the Federation to govern their citizens, but when the Romulans attack all members of the Federation will stand with the Vulcans to help and protect the Vulcan government. With this united front not only are the Vulcans protected but the threat of further attacks on other members are lessened. Additionally, a sharing of unique strengths, mutual respect and sometimes technologies, creates a stronger front.

Third, the Cultural Exchange and Learning, The U.S.-Israel alliance involves cultural exchanges, academic partnerships, and joint research projects. 

Similarly, in Star Trek Series Enterprise, The Vulcans help and guide the scientist on Earth to develop warp drive and navigate local cultures.

Fourth, this puts pressure on the next point of Trust Building. Alliances face challenges usually from differing priorities causing disagreements. 

Back to the Enterprise series we see this in the friction between Captain Archer and Sub-Commander Ta’pol. However, with time and humility on both parts we see trust grow stronger then into loyalty.

Finally, Loyalty and Sacrifice, The US- Israel alliance involves a test in character. This test sometimes requires sacrifice.  I find that trust, loyalty and sacrifice are often intertwined closely. Of course, I could go to any Federation Starship Captain and their number one to prove this point. Let’s break from this theme though, I see this type of alliance forming in the comedy series “Resident Alien”. Which features an ensemble cast with unexpected alliances. The show follows an alien who crash-lands on Earth and assumes the identity of a small-town doctor. As the alien interacts with the human residents, unlikely partnerships and friendships emerge, all to save the human race from the grays.

Supporting Israel is deeply rooted in biblical teachings. These teachings go back to the covenant that God made with Abraham. Then in Deuteronomy 7:6, God directly declares the Israeli people as His chosen. Throughout the Bible, God emphasizes the importance of Israel, honoring His promises to Abraham and the descendants. Their unique role in God’s plan is evident from the history of nations that faced destruction due to their evil dealings towards Israel. 

I've outlined the five points explaining why the US should support Israel, along with the biblical reasons, but let's delve deeper into how this alliance impacts you and your daily life. You may not realize it, but some major companies that you interact with regularly have Israeli origins. If these companies were to cease operations due to the fall of Israel, both your life and the world would undoubtedly notice.

If you've used GPS for real-time traffic updates and route optimization, you've benefited from Waze. Google acquired Waze to enhance its mapping services.

There are many other tech companies from Israel. SolarEdge, Nice, monday.com, and two major semiconductor companies. The best reason for me is that through Israel came my Savoir, a gentile, and as believers, expressing love for God includes standing with Israel, recognizing their right to the land, nationhood, and self-defense.

Journeys Through Shadows: Exploring Suicide in Fiction, Culture, and Faith

26 years ago, close to Thanksgiving, a father figure vanished from my family's life, leaving behind unanswered questions and a lingering sense of loss. His sudden absence still echoes through my memories, raising thoughts of what could have been and what relationships might have flourished. Life continued its course, but amidst the turmoil, my wife and I found out my daughter was on the way. This sparked the question if he would have known would it have changed his mind to end his life, perhaps altering the trajectory of events.

As I reflect on my personal narrative, I am drawn to explore the parallels between real-life experiences and the thematic explorations found in the realms of science fiction and biblical teachings. In doing so, I aim to deal with the complexities of human emotion, the nuances of sacrifice versus selfishness, and the varied cultural perceptions surrounding the concept of suicide. I also had to deal with the belief that suicide was a sin that could not be pardoned by God.

In the expansive universe of Star Wars, I could not find a scene of suicide. However, self-sacrifice often takes center stage, yet it is depicted as a noble act undertaken for the greater good. Characters like Ben Kenobi and Vice Admiral Holdo willingly lay down their lives to advance the cause of freedom and justice, their actions serving as catalysts for change rather than expressions of despair. Their sacrifices are portrayed as strategic choices made to tip the scales in favor of the oppressed, thus embodying the notion of selflessness in the face of adversity. This is a small embodiment of what Christ had done for us.

Conversely, the Star Trek franchise explores the theme of suicide more directly, often confronting the existential dilemmas of its characters with thought-provoking narratives. In the case of Voyager's encounter with Quinn of the Q Continuum, we are presented with a complex scenario wherein asylum-seeking intersects with notions of mortality and agency. Quinn's desperate bid for freedom from eternal existence raises profound questions about the nature of life, death, and the pursuit of individual autonomy within the confines of cosmic order. Through Quinn's plight, we are compelled to ponder the fine line between sacrifice and suicide, as well as the moral implications of choosing one's own fate in defiance of perceived injustice.

Suicide is per trade in the Orville series by Seth McFlarlane. The 3rd Seasons episode Electric Sheep is where we will land. Issac, a part of an AI race, the Kaylon, decides “that the crew of the Orville will run more efficiently” if he was not operational. He came to this conclusion because of his involvement in the attack on all organic life by the Kaylon. His remorse, hate from some of the crew and unkind words were a large part of the data he analyzed to make his conclusion. He failed to take into account the possibility of change among the organic life. A chance that there could be forgiveness and the ability to regain trust. His failed attempt to deactivate led him to a counseling session with Dr. Finn, which he realizes these facts through the session.

  

A scene later in the episode has Lt. Commander John LaMarr and an alien friend in a conversation on suicide. We see the western philosophy from Lt. Com. LaMarr on suicide, and in this case her alien race philosophy. In her culture it’s accepted that no one makes a choice to exist, and some believe they were forced into existence against their will. So, they see it as a personal decision to end their life.

Beyond the realm of fiction, cultural perspectives on suicide offer additional layers of insight into this issue. In Asian tradition, where familial honor holds paramount importance, suicide is sometimes viewed as a means of atonement for perceived failures or dishonor. Sometimes, if someone feels like they failed or brought shame to their family, they might think about suicide to make up for it. This idea of "saving face" isn't just about one person—it's about the whole family.

The Wiccan and Neopagan beliefs, opinions on suicide are mixed. Some think it goes against their rule of being harmless and ethical. But others believe in reincarnation, which means that if someone takes their own life, they might get another chance at life until they learn some spiritual lessons.

American culture, attitudes towards suicide have changed a lot. It used to be a taboo topic, something people didn't talk about. But now, people are more understanding about mental health struggles. They know that suicide is a problem in society and are trying to help by being more supportive and offering help to those who need it.

Biblical teachings of suicide occupy a complex moral and theological terrain, with narratives of despair and redemption offering valuable insights into human frailty and divine grace. The Old Testament records several instances of suicide, each fraught with its own implications and consequences. From Ahithophel's tragic end to Saul's desperate act of self-inflicted death, these stories reflect the depths of human anguish and the quest for resolution in the face of perceived overwhelming adversity.

In the New Testament, the death of Judas serves as a poignant example of suicide intertwined with themes of remorse and redemption. While Judas' betrayal of Jesus led to profound guilt and despair, his subsequent actions reveal a glimmer of repentance and regret. Although his ultimate fate is tragic, his story serves as a cautionary tale of the perils of unchecked ambition and moral compromise.

Dealing with the belief that suicide is a great sin has been an enlightening and comforting journey. Suicide is not unforgivable, but it is a permanent solution to a temporary situation. If you rest and wait for Jesus, you may even be on the verge of a blessing. Consider Job, Moses, Elijah, Jonah and even the jailer in Phillippi. Reflecting on the story of Judas, I believe that if he had waited for Easter Sunday or sought forgiveness, he could have witnessed the redemption of Christ. Saints may even see Judas in Paradise, considering his acknowledgment of Jesus as the Christ. Additionally, Judas demonstrated remorse and paid a price according to the laws of his time. However, the sin of blasphemy is the only act that God will not forgive. This sin is a premeditated decision, akin to rejecting life-saving surgery or chemotherapy. By refusing the Holy Spirit's offer of salvation, one denies God's pardon, sealing their fate with the rejection of the only means of spiritual healing and redemption.

Amidst the complexities of human suffering and spiritual redemption, the Bible offers assurances of salvation and divine mercy to those who seek solace and forgiveness. Through narratives of suffering and redemption, we are reminded of the enduring promise of God's Love and the transformative power of grace.

As we navigate the intricate tapestry of human experiences, let us approach the topic of suicide with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to engage in compassionate dialogue. By exploring the intersections of science fiction, cultural perspectives, and biblical teachings, we can gain deeper insights into the complexities of suicide and the enduring quest for meaning, redemption, and hope.

Spock, Eggs, and the Easter Bunny

  Spock, eggs, and the Easter Bunny might seem unrelated, but together they form a cosmic story. Join the journey as we explore these fascinating connections at a pace that suits your imagination.

In the Star Trek universe is "The Search for Spock," following the intense "Wrath of Khan." Spock sacrifices himself for the Enterprise, giving us an unexpected fate.  Spock's body is laid to rest on the newly formed world made by Genesis. An unexpected outcome of this is Spock coming back to life due to the effects of Genesis. As a fan, I'm pleased that the movie by Harve Bennett and directed by Leonard Nimoy chose not to conclude Spock's story. In a way, Spock experienced a resurrection, similar to the Easter event. This resurrection is not Spock saving the entire universe, but his sacrifice saves lives on the Enterprise. Admiral Kirk's search is about finding a trusted comrade and best friend.

In the world of symbols, Easter captures the essence of spring, sun, dawn, and light. Celebrated worldwide, it takes different shapes, like the American tradition of hiding candy-filled eggs for kids to find. After the egg hunt, families gather for a feast, creating a vibe similar to Thanksgiving or Christmas.

The holiday tapestry—Easter, Christmas, Valentines Day, and St. Patrick’s Day—pagan symbols are woven. As Christians, understanding this truth is crucial, guided by Christ's love model. In the sermon on the mount, Jesus emphasized that sin originates in the heart. Jesus came to us through the manger and died for us on the cross to address these matters. With this in mind, why follow traditions? Traditions can point us to the truth behind them.

Now, let's decode the symbolism of eggs, bunnies, and Easter:

🥚 **Eggs** Signifying new life in Christ, the boiled egg reflects the sealed tomb—death. The crack represents Jesus' victory over death, unveiling the cosmic connection between Easter and resurrection.
